Summary
SmartBooks are electronic reading textbooks with content based on Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport (MoEYS) textbooks for Grades 2 and 3 at three reading levels. Kampuchean Action for Primary Education (KAPE) has developed a technique for analyzing readability levels of Khmer text and enabling children to move from one level to the next based on their reading proficiency.

How it supports learning: The Smartbooks App has been used in school classrooms to support learning for Cambodian primary-school aged children. Students used tablets in their school libraries to access the SmartBooks app. In total, KAPE digitized existing textbook content from 24 lessons and created three levels of content for each lesson for a total of 72 e-books.

Research
E-books 4 Khmer: Evaluation Report: Students who had access to the SmartBooks app had statistically significant greater gains than students in the comparison groupon all EGRA subtasks except letter name identification.
Use Case
The E4K project in Cambodia improved the Khmer reading proficiency of students in Grades 2 and 3 by providing access to standard reading textbooks in electronic form and by training teachers on differentiated instruction (DI).
