Global Book Alliance in Action
Final Report and Photobook
Lack of books that are engaging, appropriate, and accessible to children remains one of the key barriers to improving literacy levels across the world. In many contexts, children have few, if any, books that are written in languages they use and understand.
Since 2018, the Global Book Alliance (GBA) has brought together major donors, including USAID, to address the issue of global book shortages and to ensure that children and youth everywhere have access to quality reading materials. As a member of GBA, USAID supported the Global Book Alliance in Action (GBAIA) activity (2019-2023), which focused on analyzing and improving children’s access to books. The GBAIA project facilitated the analysis of local book supply chains and identified opportunities for growth, developed books in local languages, and, in some contexts, worked with Ministry officials to develop national book policies.
For more information on GABIA’s work, please access the final report for an overview of the Alliance’s findings and recommendations for improving countries’ book supply chains, along with insights for identifying challenges within particular country contexts and solutions to address them. An accompanying photobook showcases specifics on program outcomes, including supply chain analyses, publisher workshops, and more.
