USAID/Ethiopia Helps Children Continue to Learn during the COVID-19 Pandemic through Radio and TV
Under the flagship USAID READ II activity, USAID/Ethiopia has been able to quickly pivot to provide educational content to children affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through radio and TV.
The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) and regional stations have started broadcasting the award-winning children’s education program “Tsehai Loves Learning” on TV and radio to help Ethiopian children continue learning while they are out of school during the COVID-19 outbreak. The national and regional weekly broadcasts are expected to reach millions of children, helping them practice reading and literacy skills from home.
The TV programming includes sign language so that deaf and hard of hearing children benefit too. Readers can see how TV can be educational and entertaining at the same time by tuning into EBC or their local Ethiopian education station. Individuals outside Ethiopia can even tune in online here!
A total of 40 educational programs will be broadcast through television and radio, using content approved through consultations with the Ministry of Education, Regional Education Bureaus, national and regional media agencies, and the USAID READ II project.
The first episode aired on EBC TV on Saturday, April 25 from 9:25-9:55 a.m., and on EBC radio from 7:30-8:00 a.m.
