Establishing local markets for books: Global Book Alliance
Private Sector Engagement to Ensure Sustainability
Focus:
Literacy is a pathway to opportunity. It improves health and well-being of individuals and families, opens up employment opportunities, and mitigates the chances that youth will pursue criminal or violent activities. In order to realize the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the global community has come together to address some of the root causes of entrenched illiteracy by systematically transforming the supply chain for local language books and supplementary reading materials. The Global Book Alliance Strategy lays out a vision for all children to have access to high-quality, local language books at the right reading level, as well as the support they need to use them effectively. The long-term solution to the global children’s book gap is in establishing robust local markets for books.
To help local book markets develop, the Alliance will address challenges across the entire book chain, from title development, publication, procurement, supply chain and distribution, and use.
