Alternative Basic Education (ABE)
The overall goal of this activity is to increase access to equitable, quality education for pastoralist and other out-of-school children living in Southern Somalia through the provision of alternative basic education. The specific objectives are: enrollment and retention of up to 21,000 out-of-school girls and boys in Central South Somalia and the graduation/certification of one cohort of 1,400 ABE learners; institutional development of education authorities to develop and enact a non-formal education strategy; enhanced capacity of community organizations to design and implement sustainable, relevant and progressive basic education programs; increased awareness of parents, community elders and religious leaders to value and support their children’s education, especially for girls; improve reading outcomes for primary grade learners in target locations; and improved teacher professional development and improved learning environment.
